MonierLifetile History

MonierLifetile LLC was formed in 1997 as the result of a joint venture between long-time industry leaders Monier Inc. and Boral Lifetile Inc. Monier was founded in 1965 and Boral Lifetile was originally established in 1962.

MonierLifetile has become the nation's leading provider of concrete roofing tile. The company continues to develop new profiles, colors and roofing components; providing innovative roofing solutions for building professionals and homeowners.

MONIER INC. FACTS
  • When Monier built its first American plant in Corona, California, in 1965,the company was already a leading roof tile manufacturer in Australia.
  • United States' participation began as a 50/50 partnership with Raymond International to manufacture and market concrete tiles using Monier technology under the name Monray.
  • By the mid-1970s, the company had grown into one of the largest roof tile manufacturing concerns in the country and in 1977 Monier bought out Monray's interest.
  • In 1987, Monier was acquired by Redland PLC of England, then the largest manufacturer of pitched roofing products in the world.
  • In late 1997, Redlands PLC was acquired by Lafarge SA, one of the world's largest building materials companies, with annual sales of $11.5 billion following the acquisition.
BORAL LIFETILE FACTS
  • Lifetile (later Boral Lifetile) was founded in 1962 in Fremont, California, and later joined forces with California Tile Inc., located in San Jose, California, and Tijuana, Mexico.
  • Manufacturing facilities were moved to Rialto, California in 1972,and several additional plants opened in other cities to keep up with rapid market growth.
  • The company was purchased in 1978 by Boral Industries, Atlanta, GA, a subsidiary of parent company, Boral Limited of Australia, a $3.5 billion international corporation with core businesses in building, construction materials and energy.
  • In 1996, it was renamed Boral Lifetile Inc.
  • Boral Lifetile was the first in the United States to produce concrete tile by a high-speed extrusion process. This method involves a thick concrete mixture forced into a mold and cut to size. It produces an incredibly strong product with sharp definition.
